The Wim Hof Method

Wim Hof is known globally as The Ice Man for his ability to tolerate cold with his mind. You will often see him climbing a snow covered mountain bare chested in just a pair of shorts. But it isn’t craziness it is backed by compelling science. Wim and a group of volunteers were injected with E coli endotoxin whilst they were undertaking the Wim Hof Method (WHM) - none of them became ill

Living in the modern world we are no longer exposed to the elements as our cavemen ancestors were. Our bodies have become less robust to our environment with our warm clothes and central heating. Certain essential systems in our body have become dormant. The WHM seeks to address this with its Three Pillars of:

  • Breathing

  • Cold therapy

  • Commitment

BREATHING: the WHM tells us to breath heavily for a period of time then to breath hold. When we breathe heavily our carbon dioxide levels go down as we hyperventilate and the pH in our bloodstream increases making it more alkali. This:

  • Improves energy levels

  • Aids detoxification

  • Rebalances the autonomic nervous system switching us to the PS state

  • Strengthens the immune system

COLD THERAPY: we can learn how to use the power of cold to

  • Burn fat

  • Boost your immune system

  • Improve sleep

  • Reduce inflammation by stimulating anti-inflammatory cytokines

  • Reduce stress/improve mood

  • Improve creativity and mental clarity

COMMITMENT: abandoning our comfort zones to undertake the above

If this is something that appeals to you in your Long Covid recovery Wim has produced an app. At the moment it is free. It takes you safely through hyperventilation, cold showers, strengthening exercises and meditation. I wussed out during the hyperventilation as my face went all tingly and this reminded me of when my oxygen levels were 86% post covid. I have since realised that this is supposed to happen 🤦🏻‍♀️

So I end with the words of the great man himself; “ a cold shower a day keeps the doctor away”
